what to focus on during your next photo walk.

Good evening everyone!

Before I talk about this week's topic I'd like to take this opportunity to say hi to all the mothers and grandmothers out there and wish you all a happy mother's day. I sincerely hoped you enjoyed your special day as it only comes once a year.

Now on to the subject of this week's blog post. What to focus on during your next photo walk. According to Wikipedia a photo walk is as follows. "It is often a communal activity organized by camera clubs, online forums or commercial organizations, sometimes in the form of a walking tour. Often the aim is to practice and improve one's own photography skills rather than a specific focus on documentary photography."

Well put Wikipedia (thanks for that)! So what should you take with you on your next photo walk you might ask? My advice is to travel light. One camera body and one lens preferably a short telephoto (say a 24mm to 70mm lens). Rather than lug 20 pounds of gear with you that will slow you down why not travel light and always be ready to grab your shot? Another thing to consider is starting your day with a plan. Say you are headed downtown and you want to shoot signs or store fronts or maybe you will set out to shoot murals or graffiti on buildings, etc.

My whole point is that by having some sort of plan before you start out on your photographic adventure you'll have the luxury of being able to concentrate on having fun and not have to fight with gear over the course of the day. Force yourself to work with less. It will make you a better photographer in the long run.

One other thing I should point out. Even though you start out with a plan don't be afraid to grab "the shot" if it presents itself to you. For instance if you have a chance encounter with an alien spacecraft then by all means take the shot! Just because it isn't on your shot list for the day, if the subject compels you just go with it!

The advice I offer to you should not be thought of as a hard and fast rule but simply think of it as a guide line. Now get out and shoot what you are passionate about and have fun!

FYI: I will likely organize and lead a photo walk or two this summer so keep an eye out for that on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ron-Gergely-Photography/132611550143033 or on twitter http://twitter.com/#!/raiderronald.

Take care and we'll talk next week.
